The Directorate of Groundnut Research (DGR) is a premier research institute in India dedicated to the study and improvement of groundnut (also known as peanut) cultivation. It operates under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), which is an autonomous organization under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Government of India.
History[edit | edit source]
The Directorate of Groundnut Research was established to address the various challenges faced by groundnut farmers in India, including issues related to crop yield, pest and disease management, and soil fertility. Over the years, the institute has made significant contributions to the development of high-yielding and disease-resistant groundnut varieties.
Research and Development[edit | edit source]
The primary focus of DGR is on the following areas:
- **Genetic Improvement**: Developing new groundnut varieties with improved yield, quality, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
- **Crop Management**: Researching best practices for groundnut cultivation, including irrigation, fertilization, and crop rotation.
- **Pest and Disease Management**: Identifying and controlling pests and diseases that affect groundnut crops.
- **Post-Harvest Technology**: Improving methods for the storage, processing, and marketing of groundnuts.
Achievements[edit | edit source]
DGR has developed several high-yielding and disease-resistant groundnut varieties that have been widely adopted by farmers across India. The institute has also contributed to the development of sustainable farming practices that enhance soil health and reduce the environmental impact of groundnut cultivation.
Collaboration[edit | edit source]
The Directorate collaborates with various national and international organizations, including other ICAR institutes, state agricultural universities, and private sector companies. These collaborations aim to enhance the scope and impact of groundnut research and development.
Location[edit | edit source]
The headquarters of the Directorate of Groundnut Research is located in Junagadh, Gujarat, which is one of the major groundnut-producing regions in India.
