From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

District of Columbia is the capital of the United States. It is not a part of any U.S. state, but is under the direct jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress. The District of Columbia is home to many national monuments and museums, primarily situated on or around the National Mall.

History[edit | edit source]

The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress, and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state. The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The District has a total area of 68.34 square miles (177.0 km2), of which 61.05 square miles (158.1 km2) is land and 7.29 square miles (18.9 km2) (10.67%) is water. The District is bordered by Montgomery County, Maryland to the northwest; Prince George's County, Maryland to the east; and Arlington County, Virginia to the south and west.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of 2020, the District had a population of 689,545 people, with a resident density of 11,367 people per square mile.

Government[edit | edit source]

The District is governed by a mayor and a 13-member city council. However, the U.S. Congress has supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large congressional delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, but the District has no representation in the U.S. Senate.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The District has growing industries not directly related to government, especially in the areas of education, finance, public policy, and scientific research. The District's gross state product in 2018-Q2 was $141 billion.

Education[edit | edit source]

The District is home to many colleges and universities, including the George Washington University, Georgetown University, and Howard University.

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

The District of Columbia has several major hospitals, including the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, George Washington University Hospital, and Howard University Hospital.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

The District is served by numerous regional transportation agencies, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), which operates the Metrorail and Metrobus services.
