In the field of public health, Trevathan served as the Director of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He played a crucial role in the CDC's efforts to prevent and control diseases like Zika and Ebola.

As a global health leader, Trevathan served as the Dean of the College for Public Health and Social Justice at Saint Louis University, where he led efforts to address health disparities and promote health equity.
