Dr. Elisha Dick

Elisha Cullen Dick (March 15, 1762 – September 22, 1825) was an American physician and political figure. He is best known for his role as one of the attending physicians at the deathbed of George Washington.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Elisha C. Dick was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He pursued his medical education in Philadelphia, where he studied under the prominent physician Benjamin Rush. After completing his studies, Dick moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where he established his medical practice.

In Alexandria, Dick quickly became a respected physician. He was known for his dedication to his patients and his innovative approaches to medical treatment. His reputation grew, and he became involved in various medical and civic organizations.

Role in George Washington's Death[edit | edit source]

Elisha C. Dick is perhaps most famously remembered for his involvement in the final days of George Washington. On December 14, 1799, Washington fell seriously ill. Dick, along with James Craik and Gustavus Richard Brown, attended to Washington during his last hours. Despite their efforts, Washington passed away. Dick's account of Washington's death has been a subject of historical interest and debate.

In addition to his medical practice, Dick was active in politics. He served as the mayor of Alexandria, Virginia from 1804 to 1805. During his tenure, he worked on various public health initiatives and civic improvements.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Elisha C. Dick married Hannah Harmon, and they had several children. He was also a member of the Freemasons and held various positions within the organization.
