Erodium cicutarium

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Erodium cicutarium, also known as Redstem Filaree or Common Stork's-bill, is a species of flowering plant in the Geraniaceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean Basin and was introduced to North America in the eighteenth century, where it has since become invasive.

Description[edit | edit source]

Erodium cicutarium is a low-growing, annual, biennial, or perennial plant. It has a deep taproot and a rosette of leaves at the base of the plant. The leaves are pinnately compound and the leaflets are deeply lobed. The flowers are small, with five purple to pink petals. The fruit is a long, beak-like capsule that splits open to release the seeds.

Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]

Erodium cicutarium is native to the Mediterranean region but has been introduced to many other parts of the world, including North America, Australia, and New Zealand. It is found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, open woodlands, and disturbed areas.

Ecology[edit | edit source]

Erodium cicutarium is a pioneer species, often colonizing disturbed areas. It is also a common weed in agricultural fields and gardens. The seeds are dispersed by wind and by adhering to animals or clothing.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Erodium cicutarium has been used in traditional medicine for various ailments. The leaves are edible and have been used as a salad green in some cultures.

Control[edit | edit source]

Control of Erodium cicutarium can be challenging due to its long-lived seed bank and its ability to regenerate from root fragments. Methods of control include hand-pulling, mowing, and the use of herbicides.
