Estradiol undecylenate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Estradiol undecylenate is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen and an estrogen ester. It is specifically an ester of estradiol with undecylenic acid. The compound is a long-acting estrogen, and is used in medicine for hormone therapy.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

As an estrogen ester, estradiol undecylenate is a prodrug of estradiol. Upon administration, it is stored in adipose tissue and slowly released over a period of time. The undecylenate ester extends the duration of action of estradiol, allowing for less frequent administration compared to estradiol itself.

Medical uses[edit | edit source]

Estradiol undecylenate is used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms and low estrogen levels. It is also used in feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Like all estrogens, estradiol undecylenate has the potential to cause side effects. These can include breast tenderness, nausea, headache, and fluid retention. More serious side effects can include blood clots and stroke.
