European Weightlifting Championships

The European Weightlifting Championships is an annual weightlifting competition organized by the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF). The event features the top weightlifters from across Europe, competing in various weight categories.

The first European Weightlifting Championships were held in 1896. Since then, the competition has grown in size and prestige, becoming one of the most important events in the sport of weightlifting. The championships have been held annually, with the exception of certain years due to World War I and World War II.
Competition Format[edit | edit source]
The competition is divided into different weight categories for both men and women. Each athlete competes in two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. The total score is the sum of the best successful lift in each of the two disciplines. Medals are awarded for the highest total score as well as for the best individual lifts in each category.
The weight categories have evolved over time. As of the latest championships, the categories are as follows:
- Men's categories: 55 kg, 61 kg, 67 kg, 73 kg, 81 kg, 89 kg, 96 kg, 102 kg, 109 kg, +109 kg
- Women's categories: 45 kg, 49 kg, 55 kg, 59 kg, 64 kg, 71 kg, 76 kg, 81 kg, 87 kg, +87 kg

Several athletes have made significant marks in the history of the European Weightlifting Championships. Some of the most notable include:
- Naim Süleymanoğlu - A legendary weightlifter known for his multiple world records and Olympic gold medals.
- Lasha Talakhadze - A Georgian weightlifter who has set numerous world records in the super-heavyweight category.
