Fibrous papule of the nose

Fibrous Papule of the Nose is a common benign lesion that represents a focal growth of fibrous tissue on the nose. It is often considered a variant of angiofibroma. Fibrous papules are usually small, less than 5mm in diameter, and manifest as firm, smooth, skin-colored or pink bumps. They are most commonly found on the nose but can also appear on other parts of the face. Fibrous papules are non-cancerous and generally do not require treatment unless for cosmetic reasons.

Etiology

The exact cause of fibrous papules is unknown. They are not associated with any systemic diseases and are considered to be idiopathic. Some studies suggest a possible link to genetic factors, as they can occasionally be found in multiple family members.

Clinical Features

Fibrous papules typically present as solitary, dome-shaped, skin-colored or pink papules on the nose. They are firm to the touch and have a smooth surface. These lesions are usually asymptomatic and do not change in size or color over time. Fibrous papules are most commonly observed in adults but can occur at any age.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of a fibrous papule is primarily clinical, based on its characteristic appearance. Dermoscopy can aid in the diagnosis by revealing a homogenous pattern without a pigment network, which helps distinguish it from other skin lesions. In uncertain cases, a biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis histologically. Histopathological examination typically shows a fibrous stroma with scattered blood vessels, without cellular atypia.

Treatment

Since fibrous papules are benign and asymptomatic, treatment is usually not necessary unless for cosmetic reasons. Various treatment options include laser therapy, electrosurgery, and excision. However, there is a risk of scarring with these procedures. Patients seeking removal for cosmetic reasons should be counseled about the potential risks and benefits of treatment.

Prognosis

The prognosis for fibrous papule of the nose is excellent, as it is a benign lesion with no malignant potential. Once removed, the papule may recur, but this is uncommon.

Prevention

There are no known preventive measures for fibrous papules, as the cause is not well understood.
