Flupentixol decanoate

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Flupentixol decanoate is a typical antipsychotic drug of the thioxanthene class. It is primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Flupentixol decanoate is a long-acting, injectable form of flupentixol, which allows for less frequent dosing and improved patient compliance.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Flupentixol decanoate acts primarily as a dopamine antagonist, blocking the D2 receptor in the brain. This action is believed to be responsible for its antipsychotic effects. It also has some activity at other receptors, including serotonin receptors and adrenergic receptors, which may contribute to its side effect profile.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Flupentixol decanoate is used in the management of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. It is particularly useful in patients who have difficulty adhering to a daily medication regimen, as the long-acting injectable form allows for dosing every two to four weeks.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of flupentixol decanoate include extrapyramidal symptoms such as tardive dyskinesia, akathisia, and parkinsonism. Other side effects can include drowsiness, dry mouth, and blurred vision. Rare but serious side effects can include neuroleptic malignant syndrome and blood dyscrasias.
