Frown

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Frown is a facial expression that typically indicates displeasure, sadness, or worry, and is characterized by the brows being drawn together and the corners of the mouth turning downward.

Definition[edit | edit source]

A frown is a facial expression in which the eyebrows are brought together, and the forehead is wrinkled, usually indicating displeasure, sadness or worry, or less often confusion or concentration. The mouth is usually closed. This is also the expression most commonly associated with anger, unhappiness or worry.

Physiology[edit | edit source]

The frown involves contraction of the brow muscles which causes the eyebrows to draw together and the forehead to wrinkle. The strength of the frown can vary greatly based on the intensity of the emotion being expressed.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

In many cultures, a frown is seen as a negative or hostile expression. It can be used to express disapproval, disagreement, or displeasure. It can also be used to show empathy or sympathy with someone who is upset or unhappy.

Psychology[edit | edit source]

In psychology, the frown is often associated with negative emotions such as anger, sadness, and worry. However, it can also be a sign of concentration or deep thought.
