George E. Burch (January 10, 1910 – June 11, 1986) was an American cardiologist and medical researcher known for his contributions to the field of cardiology. He was a prominent figure in the development of modern cardiovascular medicine and made significant advancements in the understanding and treatment of heart disease.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

George Edward Burch was born on January 10, 1910, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Tulane University, where he earned his B.S. degree in 1930 and his M.D. degree in 1933. Burch completed his internship and residency at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

Career[edit | edit source]

Burch joined the faculty of Tulane University School of Medicine in 1937, where he spent the majority of his career. He became a full professor in 1947 and served as the chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1952 to 1975. During his tenure, Burch was instrumental in establishing Tulane as a leading center for cardiovascular research.

Contributions to Cardiology[edit | edit source]

Burch's research focused on the physiology and pathology of the cardiovascular system. He made pioneering contributions to the understanding of electrocardiography (ECG) and the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. Burch developed several innovative techniques and devices, including the Burch-Wartofsky Point Score for the assessment of thyroid storm.

Throughout his career, Burch published numerous articles in leading medical journals and authored several influential textbooks on cardiology.
