Gwaramari
Gwaramari is a traditional Nepalese breakfast food item, particularly popular in the Newar community. It is a type of bread, round in shape and deep-fried until golden brown. The name 'Gwaramari' is derived from the Newari language, where 'Gwara' means round and 'Mari' means bread.
Ingredients and Preparation[edit | edit source]
The main ingredients of Gwaramari are flour, water, yeast, and salt. The dough is prepared by mixing flour, water, yeast, and salt. The dough is then left to ferment for a few hours. After the dough has risen, small portions of the dough are deep-fried in oil until they turn golden brown. The result is a round, fluffy bread with a crispy exterior and a soft interior.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Gwaramari holds a significant place in the Newar community. It is commonly consumed for breakfast, often paired with a hot cup of chai or Nepali tea. It is also a common sight in local tea shops in the early mornings. During special occasions and festivals, Gwaramari is often served as a part of the feast.
Nutritional Value[edit | edit source]
Gwaramari is a rich source of carbohydrates due to the high flour content. It also contains a small amount of protein from the yeast. However, as it is deep-fried, it is also high in fat and calories.
Variations[edit | edit source]
There are several variations of Gwaramari. Some recipes include additional ingredients such as sugar, butter, or milk to enhance the flavor. There are also variations in the size and shape of the bread, ranging from small, bite-sized pieces to larger, bun-sized portions.
