Hamarøy

Hamarøy is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Salten. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Oppeid. Other villages in Hamarøy include Innhavet, Presteid, Skutvika, and Ulvsvåg.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Hamarøy is located on the southern part of the island of Hinnøya, and on the northern part of the mainland on the eastern side of the Ofoten fjord. The municipality is known for its distinctive and varied scenery, with white sandy beaches, steep mountains, and pine forests.

The municipality of Hamarøy was established on 1 January 1838. The new municipality of Tysfjord was separated from Hamarøy on 1 January 1869.

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

Hamarøy has a local medical centre located in Oppeid, providing primary healthcare services to the residents. This includes general practice, emergency room, home care services, and physiotherapy. The nearest hospital is in Bodø, which is approximately 3 hours away by car.

Notable people[edit | edit source]

The famous Norwegian author Knut Hamsun was born in Hamarøy, and the area is believed to have inspired many of his works. The Knut Hamsun Centre, located in Presteid, is a museum dedicated to the author's life and work.
