Hanging as capital punishment[edit | edit source]
Hanging is a method of capital punishment where the condemned individual is suspended by the neck from a gallows or gibbet until dead. Hanging is also used to describe the act of suspending an object, such as a decoration, from above so it moves freely, like a tapestry on a wall or a curtain over a window.
Capital Punishment[edit | edit source]
In the context of capital punishment, hanging has been a widely used method throughout history and across different cultures. The process involves the use of a rope or other ligature placed around the neck of the condemned individual, who is then suspended from a fixed structure. The goal is to cause death by cutting off the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain, either through the obstruction of the airway or by damaging the cervical vertebrae and spinal cord.
There are two main types of hanging as a method of execution:
- Short drop hanging: The individual is suspended from a relatively short distance, causing death primarily by strangulation. This method results in a slower and more painful death, as it can take several minutes for the person to lose consciousness and eventually die.
- Long drop hanging: Also known as the "standard drop," this method involves calculating the appropriate drop length based on the individual's weight and physical characteristics. The goal is to cause instantaneous death by breaking the neck and severing the spinal cord.
Other methods[edit | edit source]
Hanging as a form of capital punishment has been largely replaced by other methods, such as lethal injection and electrocution, in many countries due to concerns about the potential for suffering and the inhumane nature of the practice. However, some countries still use hanging as a method of execution.
