Harrington jacket is a lightweight, waist-length jacket made from cotton, polyester, wool, or suede. Traditionally, it features a tartan or Fraser tartan lining, a two-button collar, and ribbed cuffs and hem. The jacket received its name from a character named Rodney Harrington (played by Ryan O'Neal) in the 1960s television series Peyton Place. The Harrington jacket has become an iconic piece of British clothing and has been popular among various youth subcultures, including the mods and skinheads.

History[edit | edit source]

The Harrington jacket was first made in the 1930s by the British company Baracuta. The original design, known as the G9, was created by John and Isaac Miller. It was initially marketed as a golf jacket, with its lightweight design allowing for ease of movement. The jacket's popularity surged in the 1960s when it was adopted by the mod subculture, who were drawn to its clean lines and casual yet smart appearance.

Design and Features[edit | edit source]

The classic Harrington jacket design includes a YKK zip, two front flap pockets, an umbrella back vent which helps repel water, and a ribbed waistband and cuffs. The interior lining is often made of Fraser tartan, a pattern that adds a distinctive touch to the jacket's design. The collar can be worn up and fastened with two buttons, providing protection against the wind.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Over the years, the Harrington jacket has been worn by numerous high-profile figures, including Steve McQueen, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra, which has helped cement its status as a timeless piece of fashion. Its association with various music and youth cultures from the 1960s onwards has made the Harrington jacket a symbol of rebellion and style.

In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]

The Harrington jacket has made numerous appearances in films, television shows, and music videos, often worn by characters or individuals associated with cool, rebellious, or modish personas. Its versatility and classic style have kept it relevant in fashion circles.

Variations[edit | edit source]

While the original Baracuta G9 remains the definitive Harrington jacket, many brands and designers have created their own versions. Variations may differ in fabric, color, and lining pattern, but the essential design elements remain consistent. This has allowed the Harrington jacket to evolve with fashion trends while maintaining its classic appeal.
