Helen Rodriguez-Trias

Helen Rodríguez Trías (July 7, 1929 – December 27, 2001) was a pioneering Puerto Rican pediatrician, educator, and women's rights advocate. She was a key figure in the women's health movement and made significant contributions to the field of public health.

Early Life and Education

Helen Rodríguez Trías was born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents. She spent part of her childhood in Puerto Rico, where she attended the University of Puerto Rico. She earned her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1960.

Career

After completing her medical degree, Rodríguez Trías returned to New York City, where she began her residency in pediatrics at the University Hospital of Brooklyn. She became the first Latina director of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and was a founding member of the Committee to End Sterilization Abuse.

Advocacy and Contributions

Rodríguez Trías was a vocal advocate for the rights of women and children, particularly in the areas of reproductive health and healthcare access. She worked tirelessly to address issues such as forced sterilization and health disparities among minority populations.
