Henry Morris Naglee (January 15, 1815 – March 5, 1886) was a United States Civil War brigadier general and banker. He is best known for his service during the American Civil War and his contributions to the development of California's wine industry.

Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Henry Morris Naglee was born on January 15, 1815, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1835. After graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and served in the Second Seminole War in Florida.

Military Service[edit | edit source]

Naglee resigned from the army in 1839 and moved to California during the California Gold Rush. He rejoined the military during the American Civil War, where he was appointed as a brigadier general of volunteers. He commanded a brigade in the Army of the Potomac and later served in the Department of North Carolina.

Civil War Contributions[edit | edit source]

During the Peninsula Campaign, Naglee's brigade played a significant role in the Battle of Seven Pines. His leadership and tactical skills were noted, and he was praised for his actions during the battle. After the Peninsula Campaign, he was transferred to the Department of North Carolina, where he continued to serve with distinction.

After the Civil War, Naglee returned to California and became involved in the banking industry. He was also a pioneer in the state's wine industry, establishing one of the first commercial vineyards in the region. His efforts contributed to the growth and development of California's wine production.

Naglee was known for his colorful personality and was involved in several high-profile legal disputes. He passed away on March 5, 1886, in San Francisco, California.
