Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor
Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HBEGF gene. It is a member of the EGF family of proteins, which play a role in cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. HB-EGF is unique among the EGF family due to its ability to bind to heparin.
Function[edit | edit source]
HB-EGF is synthesized as a membrane-anchored glycoprotein and is then cleaved to produce a soluble form. It stimulates the proliferation of smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, and keratinocytes, and is involved in wound healing, cardiac hypertrophy, and heart development. It also plays a role in cancer progression.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
HB-EGF is overexpressed in several types of cancers, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and lung cancer. It is also implicated in the progression of atherosclerosis. In addition, it has been identified as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.
