Himalayan Trust

The Himalayan Trust is a non-profit organization founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1960. The primary mission of the Trust is to improve the living conditions and provide educational opportunities for the people of the Khumbu region in Nepal. The Trust has been instrumental in building schools, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure in the region.

History[edit | edit source]

The Himalayan Trust was established following Sir Edmund Hillary's successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. Deeply moved by the poverty and lack of basic amenities in the Khumbu region, Hillary decided to give back to the Sherpa people who had supported his expedition. The Trust was officially founded in 1960 and has since played a crucial role in the development of the region.

Projects[edit | edit source]

The Himalayan Trust has undertaken numerous projects over the years, focusing on education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Education[edit | edit source]

One of the Trust's primary objectives is to provide quality education to the children of the Khumbu region. The Trust has built several schools, including the Khumjung School, which was the first school established by the Trust in 1961. The Trust also provides scholarships and teacher training programs to ensure a high standard of education.

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

The Trust has made significant contributions to healthcare in the Khumbu region. It established the Kunde Hospital in 1966, which provides essential medical services to the local population. The Trust also runs various health camps and vaccination programs to improve the overall health of the community.

Infrastructure[edit | edit source]

In addition to education and healthcare, the Himalayan Trust has been involved in building essential infrastructure such as bridges, water supply systems, and sanitation facilities. These projects have greatly improved the quality of life for the people in the Khumbu region.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Himalayan Trust continues to honor the legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary by working closely with the local communities to identify and address their needs. The Trust's efforts have had a lasting impact on the region, contributing to its development and the well-being of its people.
