Hypogastrium

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hypogastrium is a region of the abdomen located below the umbilical region. The term is often used in the field of medicine to help localize pain or symptoms in the lowermost region of the abdomen.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The hypogastrium is the lower third region of the abdomen, which is located beneath the umbilical region. It is bordered by the pelvic brim and the pubic symphysis. The hypogastrium is further divided into the pubic region or pubis, and the left and right inguinal regions or groin.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

In clinical practice, the term hypogastrium helps in localizing symptoms and signs of disease. For instance, pain in the hypogastrium can indicate various conditions such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, or pelvic inflammatory disease. It is also the region examined during a pelvic examination.
