ISO 639-2 is part of the ISO 639 series of international standards for language codes. It provides a three-letter code, known as an alpha-3 code, for the representation of names of languages. This standard is maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was first published in 1998.

Overview[edit | edit source]

ISO 639-2 is designed to cover a wide range of languages, including both individual languages and language families. It is particularly useful in contexts where a more comprehensive set of language codes is required than what is provided by ISO 639-1, which uses two-letter codes.

The standard includes two sets of three-letter codes:

  • ISO 639-2/B (bibliographic codes): These codes are derived from the English name of the language and are used primarily in library and bibliographic contexts.
  • ISO 639-2/T (terminological codes): These codes are derived from the native name of the language and are used in linguistic and technical contexts.

For example, the language code for French is "fre" in ISO 639-2/B and "fra" in ISO 639-2/T.

Structure[edit | edit source]

ISO 639-2 codes are structured as follows:

  • Each code consists of three lowercase letters.
  • The codes are assigned to individual languages, language families, and language groups.
  • The codes are intended to be stable; once assigned, a code is not reused for a different language.

Applications[edit | edit source]

ISO 639-2 is widely used in various fields, including:

Maintenance[edit | edit source]

The maintenance of ISO 639-2 is overseen by the ISO 639-2 Registration Authority, which is hosted by the Library of Congress in the United States. The Registration Authority is responsible for processing requests for new language codes and updates to existing codes.
