Established in 1969, the IOM has been at the forefront of research into the effects of the workplace on health, and the impact of environmental factors on the health of the population.

History[edit | edit source]

The Institute of Occupational Medicine was founded in 1969 by the National Coal Board (NCB) in the United Kingdom. The NCB established the IOM to provide research and advisory services in occupational health, particularly in relation to coal mining. Over the years, the IOM has expanded its scope to include a wide range of industries and environmental health issues.

Research[edit | edit source]

The IOM conducts research in a variety of areas related to occupational and environmental health. This includes studies on the health effects of air pollution, the impact of nanomaterials on health, and the risks associated with exposure to asbestos. The IOM also conducts research into the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries, and the promotion of health in the workplace.

Services[edit | edit source]

In addition to its research activities, the IOM provides a range of services to businesses and other organizations. These include health and safety consultancy, laboratory services, and training in occupational health and safety. The IOM also provides expert witness services in legal cases related to occupational and environmental health.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The work of the Institute of Occupational Medicine has had a significant impact on occupational health policy and practice, both in the UK and internationally. The IOM's research has contributed to the development of health and safety regulations, and its services have helped businesses to improve the health and safety of their workers.
