The restaurant was initially located inside a gas station at the corner of 47th Avenue and Mission Road in Kansas City, Kansas. The unique setting of the restaurant inside a gas station quickly became a notable aspect of its identity.
In 2014, the restaurant rebranded to "Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que" to better reflect its Kansas City roots and to distinguish itself from other barbecue establishments.
