John Hulley
19th-century English gymnast and promoter of physical education
John Hulley (1832 – 1875) was a pioneering English gymnast and a significant figure in the promotion of physical education during the 19th century. He is best known for his role in the establishment of the National Olympian Association, which was a precursor to the modern Olympic Games.

John Hulley was born in Liverpool, England in 1832. Little is known about his early life and education, but he developed a keen interest in physical fitness and gymnastics from a young age.

In the 1860s, Hulley became a prominent advocate for physical education. He founded several gymnasiums in Liverpool, where he promoted the benefits of regular exercise and physical training. His efforts were instrumental in popularizing gymnastics and other forms of physical activity in the region.
National Olympian Association[edit | edit source]
In 1865, Hulley co-founded the National Olympian Association (NOA) along with Ernest George Ravenstein and William Penny Brookes. The NOA aimed to promote physical education and organize athletic competitions. The first Olympian Games organized by the NOA were held in London in 1866, attracting athletes from across the country.

John Hulley's work laid the groundwork for the modern Olympic movement.
