John Nkengasong
John Nkengasong is a prominent Cameroonian virologist and public health expert. He is known for his significant contributions to the field of virology and his leadership in combating infectious diseases, particularly in Africa.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
John Nkengasong was born in Cameroon. He pursued his higher education in the field of virology and public health. Nkengasong earned a master's degree in tropical biomedical science from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, and a doctorate in medical sciences (virology) from the University of Brussels.
Career[edit | edit source]
Nkengasong began his career at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he held various positions, including Chief of the International Laboratory Branch, Division of Global HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. He played a crucial role in the implementation of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and was instrumental in establishing laboratory networks across Africa.
In 2016, Nkengasong was appointed as the first Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), an institution of the African Union. Under his leadership, Africa CDC has been at the forefront of the continent's response to various health crises, including the Ebola virus epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic.

John Nkengasong has been a vocal advocate for strengthening health systems in Africa. He has emphasized the importance of laboratory systems, disease surveillance, and public health workforce development.
