John Patrick Fitzgerald (born 1950) is a renowned American physician and medical researcher. He is best known for his contributions to the field of cardiology, particularly in the development of innovative treatments for heart disease.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
John Patrick Fitzgerald was born in New York City, New York, in 1950. He attended Harvard University, where he earned his B.A. in Biology in 1972. He then went on to receive his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1976.

After completing his medical degree, Fitzgerald undertook a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He subsequently completed a fellowship in cardiology at the same institution. In 1982, he joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor of medicine.
Fitzgerald's research has focused on the mechanisms of atherosclerosis and the development of new therapeutic strategies for coronary artery disease. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and has been a principal investigator on numerous National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants.
Contributions to Cardiology[edit | edit source]
One of Fitzgerald's most significant contributions to cardiology is his work on angioplasty and stent technology. His research has led to the development of more effective and safer stents, which are now widely used in the treatment of coronary artery disease.
Fitzgerald has also been involved in the development of drug-eluting stents, which release medication to prevent the re-narrowing of arteries after angioplasty. His work in this area has significantly improved patient outcomes and has become a standard treatment in interventional cardiology.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Throughout his career, Fitzgerald has received numerous awards and honors, including:
- The American Heart Association's Distinguished Scientist Award
- The Clinical Research Prize from the American College of Cardiology
- Election to the National Academy of Medicine
