John Spencer Login (1809–1863) was a notable British physician and administrator in India during the British Raj. He is best remembered for his role as the guardian of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Sikh Emperor, after the annexation of the Punjab by the British East India Company.

Early Life and Education

John Spencer Login was born in 1809 in Scotland. He pursued his medical education at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with a degree in medicine. Following his graduation, Login decided to join the British East India Company's service and moved to India.

Career in India

Upon arriving in India, Login initially served as a surgeon with the British East India Company's forces. His medical skills, combined with his administrative acumen, quickly garnered attention, and he was appointed to various significant positions within the company's administration.

One of the pivotal moments in Login's career came after the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849, which led to the annexation of the Punjab by the British. In this role, Login was responsible for the young Maharaja's education and well-being, and he played a crucial part in shaping Duleep Singh's early years.

Login's guardianship of Duleep Singh was marked by efforts to acclimatize the young Maharaja to British culture and values, a task that involved moving him to England and overseeing his education and conversion to Christianity.
