Karan Singh (born 9 March 1931) is an Indian politician, philanthropist, and poet who has played a significant role in the political and cultural landscape of India. He is the son of Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir before its accession to India in 1947. Karan Singh has served in various capacities, including as the Sadr-i-Riyasat (Constitutional Head of State) of Jammu and Kashmir, a member of the Indian Parliament, and the Indian Ambassador to the USA.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Karan Singh was born in Cannes, France, into the royal family of Jammu and Kashmir. He was educated in India and abroad, completing his studies at the Doon School, Dehradun, and subsequently earning his degree from the University of Delhi. He further pursued his education at the University of Cambridge, where he was exposed to global political and social ideologies.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Karan Singh's political career began in 1949 when he was appointed as the Regent of Jammu and Kashmir, a position he held until 1952. Following the constitutional changes, he became the Sadr-i-Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir, serving from 1952 to 1965. His tenure was marked by efforts to integrate the state more closely with India, amidst the backdrop of political turmoil and conflict in the region.

In 1967, Karan Singh transitioned to national politics, joining the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament, and later served in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house. Throughout his political career, he held several key ministerial portfolios, including Health and Family Welfare, Education, and Culture.
