Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

The Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), also known as Karnataka Medical College, is a public medical school located in Hubballi, Karnataka, India. Established in August 1957, it is one of the oldest government tertiary healthcare centers in the state. Affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, KIMS is the largest multi-specialty hospital in North Karnataka and is recognized by the Medical Council of India.

Originally known as Karnataka Medical College, the institution was granted autonomous status in June 1997 and became the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences. It started out in a building known as J. G. Commerce College before being relocated to its current campus on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway near Vidyanagar, Hubballi.

KIMS, Hubballi serves the community by providing tertiary healthcare services and developing healthcare providers and researchers. In the 1980s and 1990s, it transformed from a hospital treating cancer patients to a renowned regional center for cancer treatment and research. It was also the first medical college in India to offer a full-fledged postgraduate course in pediatrics.

Despite facing challenges such as lack of funding and decline in staff and facilities, the government of Karnataka established a Governing Council and granted autonomy to the institution. The current objectives of KIMS include providing comprehensive medical and paramedical education, conducting research, and offering various healthcare services to the society. The institute has made significant progress in terms of facilities and healthcare services, including specialties like cardiology and nephrology.

With its rich history and commitment to healthcare, the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences continues to play a vital role in providing quality medical education and healthcare services to the people of Karnataka and neighboring states.
