Kasaan
Kasaan is a small city located on the eastern shore of Prince of Wales Island, in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean, within the U.S. state of Alaska. Despite its small size, Kasaan holds a significant place in the history of the Haida people, a Native American tribe, and is home to a number of important historical and cultural sites.
History[edit | edit source]
Kasaan was originally a village of the Haida people, who migrated from Haida Gwaii in Canada to Prince of Wales Island. The name "Kasaan" comes from the Haida word meaning "pretty town." The Haida people have a rich history and culture, with a strong tradition of wood carving, weaving, and storytelling.
In the late 19th century, Kasaan became a hub for the mining industry, with the establishment of the Kasaan Peninsula Copper Mine. The mine was in operation until the early 20th century, and its remnants can still be seen today.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Kasaan is home to the Chief Son-i-Hat Whale House, a National Historic Landmark. The Whale House is a traditional Haida longhouse, built in the late 19th century by Chief Son-i-Hat. It is one of the few remaining examples of traditional Haida architecture, and is decorated with intricate carvings depicting Haida myths and legends.
The Kasaan Haida Heritage Foundation works to preserve and promote Haida culture, through educational programs, cultural events, and the maintenance of historical sites.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Kasaan is located on the eastern shore of Prince of Wales Island, the fourth largest island in the United States. The city is surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the U.S., which provides opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.
Health[edit | edit source]
Like many remote Alaskan communities, Kasaan faces unique health challenges. Access to healthcare services is limited, and residents often have to travel to larger cities for medical treatment. The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium provides some healthcare services to Kasaan and other communities in the region.
