List of Australian Herbs and Spices is a comprehensive catalogue of the various herbs and spices that are native to Australia. These plants have been used for centuries by the indigenous Aboriginal people for their medicinal properties and culinary uses.

Herbs[edit | edit source]

Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is a rainforest tree native to Australia. The leaves are used in cooking for their strong lemon flavour.

Aniseed Myrtle (Syzygium anisatum) is a rare Australian rainforest tree with leaves that have an aniseed scent and flavour.

Wattleseed is a term used to describe the edible seeds from around 120 species of Australian Acacia that were traditionally used as food by Aboriginal Australians, and are now used in some contemporary Australian cuisine.

Saltbush is a plant used by Aboriginal Australians for its ability to add a salty flavour to meals.

Tasmanian Pepper (Tasmannia lanceolata) is a shrub native to woodlands and cool temperate rainforest of south-eastern Australia. The leaves and berries can be used as a spice.

Bush Tomato (Solanum centrale) is a desert plant whose fruits have a strong sun-dried tomato, tamarillo and caramel flavour that can be used as a spice.

Macadamia Nut (Macadamia integrifolia) is a native Australian nut, it is globally renowned for its crunchy texture and rich, buttery flavour.

Kakadu Plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) is a native Australian bush food. It is green and has a tart taste. It is known for its medicinal properties and is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C.
