List of Mexican Dishes

Mexican cuisine is a complex and ancient cuisine, with techniques and skills developed over thousands of years of history. It is created mostly with ingredients native to Mexico, as well as those brought over by the Spanish conquistadors, with some new influences since then. Mexican cuisine has been influenced by its proximity to the US-Mexican border. For example, burritos and tacos were traditionally sold in Mexican markets and consumed by locals before they became popular in the United States. This is a list of notable Mexican dishes and foods.

Main Dishes[edit | edit source]

Taco - A traditional Mexican dish consisting of a small hand-sized corn or wheat tortilla topped with a filling. The tortilla is then folded around the filling and eaten by hand.

Enchilada - A corn tortilla rolled around a filling and covered with a chili pepper sauce. Enchiladas can be filled with a variety of ingredients, including various meats, cheese, beans, potatoes, vegetables, seafood or combinations.

Tamale - A traditional Mexican dish made of masa (a dough made from corn) that's filled with meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, or chilies, then wrapped in a corn husk and steamed.

Chiles en nogada - A dish from Mexican cuisine. The name comes from the Spanish word for walnut, nogal. It consists of poblano chilis filled with picadillo topped with a walnut-based cream sauce, called nogada, and pomegranate seeds, giving it the three colors of the Mexican flag.

Pozole - A traditional soup made from hominy, with meat (typically pork), and garnished with shredded lettuce or cabbage, chili peppers, radish, onion, lime juice, and oregano.

Desserts[edit | edit source]

Churro - A fried-dough pastry—predominantly choux—based snack. Churros are traditional in Spain and Portugal, where they originated, as well as the Philippines and Ibero-America.

Flan - A type of egg custard dessert, often with a layer of soft caramel on top, as opposed to crème brûlée, which is custard with a hard caramel top.

Tres leches cake - Also known as pan tres leches ("three milks bread"), is a sponge cake—in some recipes, a butter cake—soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream.

Beverages[edit | edit source]

Tequila - A distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila and in the Jaliscan Highlands (Los Altos de Jalisco) of the central western Mexican state of Jalisco.

Mezcal - A distilled alcoholic beverage made from any type of agave. The word mezcal comes from Nahuatl mexcalli, which means "oven-cooked agave".

Pulque - An alcoholic beverage made from the fermented sap of the maguey (agave) plant. It is traditional to central Mexico, where it has been produced for millennia. This is a non-exhaustive food and drink related list.
