Dumplings are a type of food that consists of pieces of dough, often wrapped around a filling. The dough can be based on bread, flour, or potatoes, and may be filled with meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruits, or sweets. Dumplings may be prepared using a variety of methods, including baking, boiling, frying, simmering, or steaming. They are a traditional dish in many world cuisines, including Chinese cuisine, Italian cuisine, Polish cuisine, and American cuisine. This is a list of notable dumpling varieties.

Types of Dumplings[edit | edit source]

Asian Dumplings[edit | edit source]

  • Jiaozi: A type of Chinese dumpling, commonly eaten in East Asia. They are one of the major foods eaten during the Chinese New Year and year-round in the northern provinces.
  • Gyoza: The Japanese version of the Chinese dumpling jiaozi.
  • Mandu: A Korean dumpling. It is similar to the Chinese jiaozi and the Japanese gyoza.
  • Samosa: A fried or baked pastry with a savory filling, such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, lentils, and sometimes meat. They are a popular snack across the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia and the Middle East.

European Dumplings[edit | edit source]

  • Pierogi: A type of filled dumpling native to Central and Eastern Europe, especially Poland and Ukraine.
  • Ravioli: A type of pasta comprising a filling enveloped in thin pasta dough. It originated in Italy and is a staple of Italian cuisine.
  • Knödel: A type of dumpling that is a staple of Central European and East European cuisine.

American Dumplings[edit | edit source]

  • Chicken and dumplings: A popular comfort food in the Southern and Midwestern United States, this dish consists of a chicken cooked in water, with the resulting chicken broth being used to cook the dumplings.
  • Apple dumpling: A pastry filled with apple, cinnamon and occasionally raisins. They are native to the northeastern United States, particularly Pennsylvania.
