List of wheat diseases
List of Wheat Diseases is a comprehensive catalogue of diseases that affect wheat, one of the most widely cultivated cereal crops worldwide. Wheat diseases can be caused by various pathogens, including fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. These diseases can significantly impact wheat yield and quality, posing a major threat to global food security.
Fungal Diseases[edit | edit source]
Fungal diseases are the most common type of wheat diseases. They are caused by various species of fungi that infect wheat plants, leading to a range of symptoms and yield losses.
- Fusarium Head Blight (also known as scab) is caused by several species of Fusarium fungi. It affects the grain heads of wheat, causing them to appear bleached or pinkish.
- Septoria tritici blotch is caused by the fungus Zymoseptoria tritici. It causes blotches on wheat leaves, which can lead to significant yield losses.
- Wheat Rusts include stem rust, leaf rust, and stripe rust, caused by Puccinia graminis, Puccinia triticina, and Puccinia striiformis respectively. These diseases cause rust-colored pustules on wheat leaves and stems.
Bacterial Diseases[edit | edit source]
Bacterial diseases in wheat are less common than fungal diseases, but they can still cause significant damage.
- Bacterial leaf streak is caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas translucens. It causes yellow streaks on wheat leaves.
- Bacterial leaf blight is caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae. It causes water-soaked spots on wheat leaves that eventually turn necrotic.
Viral Diseases[edit | edit source]
Viral diseases in wheat are typically transmitted by insect vectors.
- Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is transmitted by aphids and causes yellowing and dwarfing of wheat plants.
- Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) is transmitted by the wheat curl mite and causes streaking on wheat leaves.
Nematode Diseases[edit | edit source]
Nematode diseases in wheat are caused by various species of nematodes, which are microscopic worms that feed on plant roots.
- Cereal cyst nematode (Heterodera avenae) forms cysts on wheat roots, stunting plant growth.
- Root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne species) causes galls or "knots" on wheat roots, leading to reduced yield.
