Maternity hospital
(Redirected from Lying-in hospital)
Maternity hospital is a hospital specializing in providing medical and surgical care to women during pregnancy and childbirth. They also provide care for newborn infants, and may act as centers for clinical training in obstetrics and pediatrics.
History[edit | edit source]
The concept of the maternity hospital is a relatively recent one. The first such institutions were established in the 18th century. Prior to this, childbirth was a domestic event, managed by midwives and family members.
Services[edit | edit source]
Maternity hospitals provide a range of services, including antenatal care, labor and delivery services, postnatal care, and neonatal care. Some also offer fertility services and genetic counseling.
Antenatal Care[edit | edit source]
Antenatal care is the care and support given to expectant mothers from the time of conception until the start of labor. This includes regular check-ups, ultrasound scans, and screening tests to monitor the health of the mother and baby.
Labor and Delivery Services[edit | edit source]
Labor and delivery services are provided in a specially equipped labor room or delivery suite. This includes monitoring of the mother and baby during labor, pain relief options, and facilities for surgical intervention if necessary.
Postnatal Care[edit | edit source]
Postnatal care is the care given to the mother and her newborn baby immediately after the birth and for the first six weeks of life. This includes monitoring the mother's recovery, providing advice on feeding and caring for the baby, and screening for postnatal depression.
Neonatal Care[edit | edit source]
Neonatal care is the specialized care given to newborn babies who need extra support. This can include babies who are born prematurely, have a low birth weight, or have a medical condition that requires special care.
Training and Education[edit | edit source]
Maternity hospitals also play a key role in the training and education of healthcare professionals. This includes the training of obstetricians, gynecologists, pediatricians, midwives, and nurses.
