Martha J. Somerman is an American periodontist and researcher known for her contributions to the field of dental research and periodontology. She has held prominent positions in academia and government, including serving as the director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Martha Somerman was born in Brooklyn, New York City. She pursued her undergraduate studies at New York University, where she developed an interest in biology and dental science. Somerman earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from New York University College of Dentistry. She furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Science (MS) in periodontics from the University of Rochester and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in pharmacology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Somerman began her career in academia, joining the faculty at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She became a full professor and served as the chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine. Her research focused on the molecular mechanisms of tooth development and regeneration, contributing significantly to the understanding of periodontal disease and tissue engineering.

In 2002, Somerman was appointed as the dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where she continued her research and leadership in dental education. Her tenure at the University of Washington was marked by efforts to integrate research and clinical practice, enhancing the educational experience for dental students.

National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research[edit | edit source]

In 2011, Somerman was appointed as the director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), a position she held until 2019.
