Mather House is one of the twelve undergraduate residential Houses of Harvard College at Harvard University. Named after the Puritan minister Increase Mather, it was established in 1970 and is known for its distinctive concrete architecture, which is a prime example of the Brutalist style.

History[edit | edit source]

Mather House was named in honor of Increase Mather, a prominent figure in the early history of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The house was designed by the architectural firm Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson, and Abbott and was completed in 1970. It was the first house at Harvard to be built in the Brutalist style, characterized by its use of raw concrete and block-like forms.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The design of Mather House is notable for its use of exposed concrete and its large, blocky structure. The house consists of a high-rise tower and several low-rise buildings, which together provide housing for approximately 400 undergraduates. The high-rise tower offers panoramic views of the Charles River and the Boston skyline.

Facilities[edit | edit source]

Mather House features a variety of facilities for its residents, including:

  • A dining hall
  • A library
  • A gym
  • Music practice rooms
  • Common rooms
  • A courtyard

The house also has a number of unique features, such as the "Mather Lather," an annual foam party held in the courtyard.

House Life[edit | edit source]

Mather House is known for its strong sense of community and vibrant social life. The house hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including formal dances, intramural sports, and cultural activities. The house motto, "Fortes fortuna adiuvat" (Fortune favors the brave), reflects the adventurous spirit of its residents.
