McKean County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,432. The county seat is Smethport. The county was created on March 26, 1804, from parts of Lycoming and Centre counties and later organized in 1826. It is named in honor of former Pennsylvania Governor and Declaration of Independence signer Thomas McKean.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 984 square miles (2,550 km²), of which 979 square miles (2,540 km²) is land and 5.0 square miles (13 km²) (0.5%) is water. The county is largely rural and forested, with the Allegheny National Forest covering a significant portion of the area.

As of the 2020 census, there were 40,432 people, 16,000 households, and 10,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 41.3 people per square mile (16/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

Economy

The economy of McKean County has historically been based on lumber and oil industries. The discovery of oil in the late 19th century led to a boom in the local economy. Today, the county's economy is more diversified, with manufacturing, healthcare, and education playing significant roles.

McKean County is served by several public school districts, including the Bradford Area School District, Kane Area School District, Otto-Eldred School District, Port Allegany School District, and Smethport Area School District.
