Medial Patellofemoral Ligament

The Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) is a band of tissue that extends from the medial side of the patella to the medial femoral condyle. This ligament is one of the primary stabilizers of the patella and helps prevent lateral displacement.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The MPFL originates from the upper inner surface of the patella and extends to the inner part of the distal femur, known as the medial femoral condyle. It is approximately 59 mm in length and 13 mm in width. The MPFL is a critical component of the medial knee structures and contributes significantly to the stability of the patella.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the MPFL is to prevent lateral displacement of the patella. It achieves this by resisting lateral patellar translation and by acting as a restraint against lateral patellar tilt and rotation. The MPFL contributes approximately 50-60% of the restraining force against lateral patellar displacement.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Injury to the MPFL is commonly associated with patellar dislocation. The ligament can be damaged or torn during a traumatic event, such as a direct blow to the knee or a sudden change in direction while the foot is planted. MPFL injuries are often accompanied by other knee injuries, such as bone bruises or cartilage damage.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for MPFL injuries depends on the severity of the injury. Non-operative treatment options include physical therapy, bracing, and activity modification. Surgical treatment is typically reserved for patients with recurrent patellar dislocations or those who fail conservative treatment. Surgical options include MPFL reconstruction or repair.
