Medicis Pharmaceutical is a pharmaceutical company that specializes in the development and marketing of products for the treatment of dermatological and aesthetic conditions. The company was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Medicis Pharmaceutical was established in 1988 by Jonah Shacknai, who served as the company's CEO until its acquisition by Valeant Pharmaceuticals in 2012. The company initially focused on the development of topical medications for skin conditions, but later expanded its product portfolio to include injectable treatments for aesthetic conditions.

Medicis Pharmaceutical's product line includes a variety of prescription medications for the treatment of skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis. The company's flagship product is Solodyn, a minocycline-based antibiotic used to treat acne. Other notable products include Restylane, a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler, and Dysport, a botulinum toxin product used to treat wrinkles.

Acquisition by Valeant Pharmaceuticals[edit | edit source]

In 2012, Medicis Pharmaceutical was acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals for $2.6 billion. The acquisition expanded Valeant's dermatology portfolio and strengthened its position in the aesthetic market.
