Menstrual flow

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Menstrual Flow

The menstrual flow, also known as menstruation, is a natural biological process experienced by females of reproductive age. This process is a part of the menstrual cycle, which prepares the female body for pregnancy each month.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Menstrual flow refers to the shedding of the endometrium, the lining of the uterus, which is expelled from the body through the vagina. This process occurs approximately once a month from puberty until menopause, except during pregnancy.

Physiology[edit | edit source]

The menstrual cycle is regulated by the hormones estrogen and progesterone. The cycle begins with the release of an egg from the ovaries during ovulation. If the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, the levels of estrogen and progesterone decrease, causing the endometrium to shed and be expelled from the body as menstrual flow.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The characteristics of menstrual flow can vary widely among individuals. The flow can range from light to heavy, and the color can vary from bright red to dark brown. The duration of menstruation also varies, but it typically lasts between three and seven days.

Health and Menstrual Flow[edit | edit source]

Changes in menstrual flow can be an indicator of various health conditions. For example, heavy or prolonged menstrual flow, known as menorrhagia, can be a sign of uterine fibroids or endometriosis. On the other hand, light or infrequent menstruation, known as oligomenorrhea, can be a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or premature ovarian failure.

Cultural and Societal Aspects[edit | edit source]

Menstruation and menstrual flow are subjects of various cultural and societal attitudes and practices. In some cultures, menstruation is considered a taboo subject, while in others it is celebrated as a rite of passage. The availability and use of menstrual hygiene products also vary widely around the world.
