Michael Lauer
Michael Lauer is an American physician and cardiologist known for his contributions to clinical research and public health. He is currently the Deputy Director for Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he provides leadership for over $30 billion in medical research investments.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Lauer was born and raised in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he majored in mathematics. He then attended Albany Medical College, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. Following medical school, Lauer completed his residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and his fellowship in cardiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Career[edit | edit source]
Lauer began his career as a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic, where he served as the Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. During his tenure, he led numerous clinical trials and contributed to the development of evidence-based medicine guidelines.
In 2007, Lauer joined the NIH as the Director of the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). In this role, he oversaw a broad portfolio of cardiovascular research and training programs.
In 2014, Lauer was appointed as the Deputy Director for Extramural Research at the NIH. In this position, he provides leadership for the NIH's extramural research program, which supports over 300,000 researchers at more than 2,500 institutions worldwide.

Lauer's research focuses on cardiovascular epidemiology, clinical trials, and health services research. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and has been recognized for his contributions to the field of cardiology.
Lauer has been instrumental in promoting the use of big data in medical research. He has advocated for the integration of electronic health records and other digital health technologies into clinical research, with the aim of improving patient outcomes and advancing medical knowledge.
