Monti, Sardinia
Monti is a municipality located in the Province of Sassari, in the Italian region of Sardinia. It is situated approximately 20 kilometers south of Olbia and 15 kilometers east of Sassari. As of 2018, Monti has a population of approximately 2,500 inhabitants.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Monti is located in the northeastern part of Sardinia, in the historical region of Gallura. The municipality is surrounded by a hilly landscape, characterized by the presence of Mediterranean maquis, vineyards, and olive groves. The town is located at an altitude of 225 meters above sea level.
History[edit | edit source]
The area of Monti has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the numerous nuraghe found in the vicinity. The town was officially founded in the 19th century, following the unification of Italy. It was originally part of the municipality of Telti, but became an independent municipality in 1959.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Monti is primarily based on agriculture, particularly the production of Vermentino wine and olive oil. The town is part of the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, a designation of origin that guarantees the quality of the wine produced in the area. Monti is also known for its production of honey, particularly the bitter honey made from the flowers of the strawberry tree.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Monti is known for its traditional Sardinian cuisine, which includes dishes such as porceddu (roasted suckling pig), seadas (a type of cheese-filled pastry), and mirto (a liqueur made from the berries of the myrtle plant). The town also hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the Festival of Vermentino in September and the Honey Festival in November.
