Motor vehicle accident

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Motor vehicle accident (MVA), also known as a car accident, auto accident, or traffic collision, occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or other stationary obstruction, such as a tree, pole or building. The result may be injury, property damage, and death.

Causes[edit | edit source]

A large number of motor vehicle accidents are caused by driver error, intoxication, or mechanical failures of vehicles. Other factors include speed, road design, road environment, and driver skill, impairment due to alcohol or drugs, and behavior, notably aggressive driving and street racing.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention measures include seat belts, airbags, ergonomic design, and crash testing. Traffic safety has been studied as a science for more than 75 years.

Epidemiology[edit | edit source]

Motor vehicle accidents are a major cause of death globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that traffic accidents will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030.
