It was established in 1912 as a private medical college, making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in China. History

Nantong University was originally founded as Nantong Medical College in 1912 by Zhang Jian, a renowned industrialist and educator in the late Qing Dynasty. The institution was among the first to adopt the modern education system in China. Throughout its history, the university has undergone several transformations and mergers, significantly expanding its academic offerings and research capabilities. In 2004, Nantong Medical College, Nantong Institute of Technology, and Nantong Teachers College were merged to form the current Nantong University.
