From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is one of the world's foremost medical research centers. The NIMHD is dedicated to promoting and supporting research designed to reduce health disparities and improve the health of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as other groups who are underserved in the United States.

History[edit | edit source]

The NIMHD was established in 2000 as the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD). In 2010, it was re-designated as an Institute by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), reflecting its expanded role and responsibilities in research on health disparities.

Mission[edit | edit source]

The mission of the NIMHD is to lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities. This is achieved through conducting and supporting research, training, disseminating information, and fostering innovative collaborations and partnerships.

Research[edit | edit source]

The NIMHD supports a wide range of research from basic science to clinical research, and population-based studies. The research focuses on diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect minority and underserved populations, such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer, and HIV/AIDS.

Programs[edit | edit source]

The NIMHD offers several programs aimed at reducing health disparities. These include the Research Centers in Minority Institutions Program, which supports research capacity and infrastructure in minority-serving institutions, and the Community-Based Participatory Research Program, which fosters partnerships between community organizations and researchers to address health disparities.
