National Student Nurses Day
National Student Nurses Day is an annual observance that celebrates the contributions of student nurses and encourages their growth and development in the field of nursing. It is celebrated on May 8th every year in the United States.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of National Student Nurses Day dates back to 1953 when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not made, but the following year, 1954, was observed as National Nurse Week. In 1974, President Nixon proclaimed a "National Nurse Week." In 1982, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors formally acknowledged May 6, 1982 as "National Nurses Day." The action affirmed a joint resolution of the United States Congress designating May 6 as "National Recognition Day for Nurses."
Observance[edit | edit source]
National Student Nurses Day is observed by recognizing the hard work and dedication of student nurses. Many hospitals, clinics, and educational institutions hold special events and ceremonies to honor their student nurses. These events often include guest speakers from the nursing profession, awards for outstanding student nurses, and activities that promote the importance of nursing as a career.
Importance[edit | edit source]
The day is important as it recognizes the vital role that student nurses play in the healthcare system. It also serves as a reminder of the dedication, commitment, and care that these future nurses bring to their profession.
