Registered Dental Nurse

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Registered Dental Nurse is a professional role within the field of dentistry. A Registered Dental Nurse (RDN) is a highly trained individual who provides support and assistance to dentists, dental hygienists, and dental therapists during a variety of dental procedures.

Role and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]

The primary role of a Registered Dental Nurse is to ensure the comfort and safety of patients during their visit to the dentist. This includes preparing the dental surgery for patient treatment, sterilizing instruments, and assisting the dentist during procedures.

In addition to these tasks, a Registered Dental Nurse may also be responsible for administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records, and managing inventory of dental supplies.

Education and Training[edit | edit source]

To become a Registered Dental Nurse, an individual must complete a course of study accredited by the General Dental Council (GDC). This typically involves a combination of classroom learning and practical experience in a dental setting.

Upon completion of their training, dental nurses must register with the GDC and commit to ongoing professional development to maintain their registration.

Career Progression[edit | edit source]

With further training and experience, a Registered Dental Nurse may progress to more specialized roles within dentistry, such as Dental Practice Manager, Dental Therapist, or Orthodontic Therapist.
