Neil Risch is a prominent American geneticist and epidemiologist known for his significant contributions to the fields of human genetics and genetic epidemiology. He is widely recognized for his research on the genetic basis of complex diseases and his work in statistical genetics.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Neil Risch was born in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he earned a degree in mathematics. He then pursued a Ph.D. in biometrics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Career[edit | edit source]

Risch began his academic career as a faculty member at Yale University, where he worked in the Department of Genetics. He later joined the faculty at Stanford University, where he became a professor of genetics and biostatistics. In 2005, he moved to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he was appointed as the director of the Institute for Human Genetics.

Neil Risch has made numerous contributions to the understanding of the genetic basis of complex diseases, including schizophrenia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. His work has focused on the development and application of statistical methods to identify genetic variants associated with these diseases.

One of his notable contributions is the development of methods for linkage analysis and association studies, which have been widely used in the field of genetic epidemiology. Risch has also been involved in large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) that have identified genetic risk factors for various diseases.
