Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+) is a coenzyme used in anabolic reactions, which build large molecules from small molecules. It is used by all forms of cellular life.

Structure[edit | edit source]

NADP+ consists of two nucleotides joined through their phosphate groups. One nucleotide contains an adenine base and the other nicotinamide. In appearance, it is a white powder that is soluble in water.

Function[edit | edit source]

NADP+ is used in anabolic reactions, such as lipid and nucleic acid synthesis, which require NADPH as a reducing agent. NADPH is the reduced form of NADP+. NADP+ differs from NAD+ in the presence of an additional phosphate group on the 2' position of the ribose ring that carries the adenine moiety.

Role in photosynthesis[edit | edit source]

In photosynthetic organisms, NADP+ is reduced by the light-dependent reactions to form NADPH. The NADPH is then used as a reducing power for the biosynthetic reactions in the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis.
